This week in reading, our main selection will be Diary of a Spider. Our comprehension skill will be cause and effect. The comprehension strategy is summarize. Our phonics skill is words with long vowel sounds, o, u, and e, in a VCe pattern. We will learn about the two sounds that the consonant g makes. We will also read some non-fiction books about spiders and flies, and learn many new facts about these creatures.
In math, we solved word problems, and used a hundreds chart to identify patterns. We learned that numbers that are multiples of two are even numbers. Some of the numbers that are multiples of two are also multiples of ten, and some of the numbers that are multiples of five are also multiples of ten. The children completed an assessment for their first unit in math.
We will begin our second unit in math. We will learn that in addition the sum will not change when we change the order of the addends. We will work with doubles facts and learn to use doubles to learn addition facts. For example, 6+7 is easy to solve if we know that 6+6=12. 7 is one more than 6, so 6+ 6=12 therefore 6+7 will be one more than 12. We could also use the doubles fact for 7+7 and then subtract one, since six is one less than 7.We will learn that we can group numbers when adding more than two numbers, to make it easier. For example, when adding 3+4+7, we can make a ten by adding the 7 and 3 together and then add the 4.

Also, remember that there will be no school this Friday, October 3rd.
